Returning God's Attentive Love

God sees you, hears you, seeks you, is concerned about you, and is actively working on your behalf. How can you return His dynamic love?

1. How can we ensure that we see Him?

“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” —Matthew 5:8

Ways to see Him:

  • Purity of heart: Ask the Spirit to refine your desires so they align with God’s. Idols distort sight (Ezek. 14:3).
  • Behold Jesus: He is “the image of the invisible God” (Col. 1:15). Fixing our eyes on Him (Heb. 12:2) is the clearest way to “see” God.
  • Recognize His work in creation (Rom. 1:20), people (Gen. 1:27), and moments of grace (Psalm 27:13).
Practice: Begin each day with a prayer: “Open my eyes, that I may see wondrous things from Your law” (Psalm 119:18).

2. How can we ensure that we hear Him?

“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.” —John 10:27

Ways to hear Him:

  • Immerse in Scripture: God’s Word is the primary way He speaks (Heb. 1:1–2; 2 Tim. 3:16).
  • Cultivate stillness: God often speaks in whispers (1 Kings 19:12). Regular silence creates space to discern His voice.
  • Obedience sharpens hearing: As we obey what we already know, our spiritual ears are tuned (John 7:17).
Practice: Create a “listening time” in prayer where you ask, “Lord, what’s on Your heart today?”

3. How can we ensure that we seek Him?

“You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.” —Jeremiah 29:13

Ways to seek Him:

  • Daily dependence: Like Israel gathered manna each morning (Ex. 16), we seek Him daily for fresh bread (Matt. 6:11).
  • Persistent longing: Cultivate a heart like David’s: “O God, You are my God; early will I seek You…” (Psalm 63:1).
  • Fasting and prayer: These are acts of hunger that express your seeking.
Practice: Keep a journal of your seeking. What questions are you asking Him? What answers or nudges do you sense?

4. How can we ensure that we are concerned about Him?

“Is it a time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled houses, while this house lies in ruins?” —Haggai 1:4

Ways to be concerned about Him:

  • Prioritize His Name, Kingdom, and will (Matt. 6:9–10). Let His agenda override yours.
  • Grieve what grieves Him: Share His heart. Injustice, idolatry, and apathy move Him. Do they move you?
  • Love His reputation: Be jealous for His glory, like Moses (Ex. 32:11–14) or Phinehas (Num. 25:11).
Practice: Ask daily: “Father, what are You feeling today? What matters most to You right now?”

5. How can we ensure we are actively working on His behalf?

“We are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us.” —2 Corinthians 5:20

Ways to serve Him:

  • Walk in obedience: Even small acts of faithfulness matter. Jesus said, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments” (John 14:15).
  • Use your gifts: Each of us has gifts meant for the building up of His body and Kingdom (1 Peter 4:10).
  • Be interruptible: Divine appointments often come disguised as inconvenience (Luke 10:33).
Practice: Dedicate each day with this prayer: “Lord, I am available. Send me. Use me. Interrupt me for Your purposes.”

Final Reflection:

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength.” (Deut. 6:5; Mark 12:30)

To see, hear, seek, care for, and work for God is to love Him with your whole being. None of this can be manufactured—it flows from a heart captivated by His love. So start here:

“We love because He first loved us.” —1 John 4:19

Let His love lead, and all five will follow.
