๐ŸŒˆ Unarmed Arms: The Hug and the Bow

Share

I was recently asked what would be the spiritual equivalent of a hug from God. The first two passages that came to mind were Matthew 23:37 and Psalm 91. The following is a modern rephrasing of those Scriptures with covenantal insight from Genesis 9.

๐Ÿ’” Matthew 23:37 โ€“ Reimagined

โ€œMy people, My people...
Iโ€™ve reached for you like a parent desperate to hold their frightened child.
Iโ€™ve opened My arms again and again, offering warmth, safety, healing.
But you flinched away.
You raised your handsโ€”not to receive My embrace,
but to resist it.โ€

โ€œI wasnโ€™t coming to harm youโ€”I came unarmed.
But you still didn't trust Me and drove Me away.โ€

๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ Psalm 91 โ€“ Reimagined

IF you let yourself be held by God,
youโ€™ll find shelter no storm can break.
His arms are stronger than fear, softer than sorrow, and wide enough for all your pain.
He guards you not with weapons,
but with His very presence.
His faithfulness is the hug that shields you.
When the world shakes and people fall, He stays.
His arms remain.
You are not alone.
And when you call, He says:
โ€œIโ€™m here. Iโ€™ve always been. Iโ€™ll never stop holding you.โ€

๐ŸŒˆ Genesis 9:13 โ€“ The Bow Laid Down

God once held a weapon: a bow, like a warrior.
But after the flood, He hung His bow in the sky.
He didnโ€™t string it or aim it.
He laid it down, pointing away from the earth.
It was as if God said,
โ€œNo more war with you.
From now on, I choose mercy. I choose covenant.
My arms will not be armed.โ€

๐Ÿ”ฅ Spiritual Contrast: Taking Up Arms vs. Running into Arms

God puts His bow away, but we still carry ours.
He opens His arms, we raise our fists.
He offers a hug; we prepare to fight.

Yet the mystery of the cross is this:
The arms we nailed open have remained that way, open, offering safety and shelter with an ongoing invitation: "Bring it in, bring it in. "

Introduction Human perception is rarely neutral. What we call โ€œbeliefโ€ is often entangled with belonging, reputation, inherited frameworks, and unspoken loyalty structures. Identity-protective cognition helps explain why truth can feel threatening when it destabilizes the social or psychological systems that give us coherence. Within theology, this becomes especially complex.
