šŸŽ¶A Song of Worship Only God Can Hear

Let’s walk through what Scripture reveals about God’s heart for obedience, especially in light of:

  • His complaints against Israel in the Old Testament
  • Jesus’ rebukes to the religious leaders of His day
  • His warnings and encouragements to the churches in Revelation

šŸ”„ What Grieved God in the Past?

1. Israel: Hollow Obedience

  • They kept the rituals, but their hearts were far from God ā€œThese people honor Me with their lips, but their hearts are far from Me.ā€ ā€“ Isaiah 29:13
  • They followed laws but ignored justice, mercy, and compassion ā€œI desire mercy, not sacrifice, and acknowledgment of God rather than burnt offerings.ā€ ā€“ Hosea 6:6
  • Jesus said, ā€œIt is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. But go and learn what this means: ā€˜I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.ā€ – Matthew 9:12-13

2. Religious Leaders in Jesus’ Day: Hypocrisy and Pride

  • External obedience with internal corruption ā€œWoe to you… you clean the outside… but inside you are full of greed and self-indulgence.ā€ ā€“ Matthew 23:25
  • They laid heavy burdens on others but didn’t carry them themselves ā€œThey tie up heavy burdens… but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them.ā€ ā€“ Matthew 23:4
  • They sought the praise of men more than God ā€œThey do all their deeds to be seen by others.ā€ ā€“ Matthew 23:5

3. Churches in Revelation 2–3: Mixed Obedience

  • Lost love (Ephesus): They did the right things but forgot why
  • Compromise (Pergamum, Thyatira): They tolerated sin
  • Dead religion (Sardis): They looked alive but were spiritually dead
  • Lukewarmness (Laodicea): Comfortable, complacent faith

šŸ’Ž So What Kind of Obedience Does God Want?

1. Obedience from the Heart

ā€œLove the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength.ā€ ā€“ Deuteronomy 6:5
ā€œIf you love Me, you will keep My commandments.ā€ ā€“ John 14:15
  • Love precedes obedience.
  • God wants a relationship, not religious robotics.

2. Obedience Empowered by the Spirit

ā€œI will put My Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in My statutesā€¦ā€ ā€“ Ezekiel 36:27
  • True obedience isn’t self-manufactured—it flows from abiding in Christ (John 15:5).
  • The Spirit transforms our desires so we want what God wants.

3. Obedience that Reflects God’s Character

ā€œHe has shown you… what is good: to do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with your God.ā€ ā€“ Micah 6:8
  • We please God when our lives reflect His justiceHis mercy, and His humility.
  • This kind of obedience blesses others and reveals God’s heart.

4. Obedience that Perseveres in Love

ā€œYou have persevered and endured… yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken your first love.ā€ ā€“ Revelation 2:3-4
  • It’s possible to do ā€œeverything rightā€ and still miss intimacy with God.
  • He longs for our affection, not just our service.

šŸ™ Prayer to Live This Out

Lord, keep my heart tender and true. May I not fall into empty rituals or prideful rule-keeping. Teach me to walk humbly with You—to obey from a heart of love, empowered by Your Spirit. Let my obedience be a song of worship that only You hear.
