🌄 Devotional: The Valley Before the Climb
- “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.” — Psalm 23:4
We often dream of the mountaintop—of standing in the high places of life, full of clarity, victory, and intimacy with God. The summit is where the air feels lighter, the view is clear, and the presence of God seems tangible. And yet, many of us are surprised to discover that before we even begin the climb, we must first pass through a valley.
In Scripture, valleys are not just geographic low points—they represent seasons of testing, brokenness, and humility. They are places of shadow, but also of transformation.
- “Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.” — James 4:10
David did not reach his kingdom without first walking through caves and betrayal. Moses met God on Mount Sinai, but only after walking the wilderness with a burdened heart. Jesus Himself descended into the depths of human suffering before ascending in glory.
The valley is not a detour. It’s the path.
God often prepares us in the valley for what He intends to entrust to us on the mountain. It’s in the low places where we learn to hear His voice without distraction, where we are refined, where false strength is stripped away so that we might lean entirely on Him.
- “After you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace… will Himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.” — 1 Peter 5:10
Reflection: Are you longing for a mountaintop but currently walking through a valley? Don’t despise the valley—it is holy ground.
God is not waiting for you at the summit; He is walking with you now. Let this season shape you. The climb will come. The mountaintop will rise before you. But first, the valley must do its work.
Prayer: Lord, I confess that I long for the mountaintop—the place of vision and victory. But I find myself in the valley, and it’s hard to see the way forward. Teach me to trust You here. I know that every step—valley or mountain—is under Your hand.
🪞Truth to remember: The valley is not punishment—it is preparation. And your Shepherd never leaves you there alone.
