Little Apocalypse: The "Revelation" of Isaiah

Isaiah and Revelation share deep thematic and phrasal connections. John’s apocalyptic vision is heavily indebted to the imagery, cadence, and theological expectations found in Isaiah. Here we'll explore major phrases and themes that tie them together.

1. New Heavens and New Earth 🌍✨

Isaiah 65:17; 66:22“Behold, I create new heavens and a new earth…”
Revelation 21:1“Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth…”

Both envision God’s cosmic renewal, not just restoring but transforming creation, where sin, death, and chaos are permanently removed.

2. The New Jerusalem / Zion as Bride 👰‍♀️🏙

  • Isaiah 62:4–5 – Jerusalem will no longer be called Forsaken but “My Delight is in Her… as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride, so shall your God rejoice over you.”
  • Isaiah 54:5, 11–12 – God as husband, Zion adorned with precious stones.
  • Revelation 21:2, 9–11 – The holy city, New Jerusalem, comes down like a bride adorned for her husband, radiant with jewels.
John’s vision fuses Isaiah’s marital imagery of God and Zion with the city imagery of Jerusalem’s restoration.

3. Light vs. Darkness 🌞🌑

Isaiah 60:19–20“The LORD will be your everlasting light, and your days of mourning shall be ended.”
  • Revelation 21:23–25; 22:5 – No need for sun or moon, for God and the Lamb are its light.
Both describe the final state where God’s presence replaces created lights.

4. Living Waters and Rivers of Life 💧🌱

Isaiah 55:1“Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters…”
  • Isaiah 58:11 – God makes His people “like a watered garden.”
  • Isaiah 66:12 – Peace flowing like a river.
  • Revelation 21:6; 22:1, 17 – The water of life flows from God’s throne; the Spirit and bride say, “Come! Let the one who is thirsty come.”
John echoes Isaiah’s call to the thirsty, now fulfilled in the Lamb’s reign.

5. The Nations Bringing Tribute 🌍👑

  • Isaiah 2:2–3; 60:3–11; 66:18–20 – Nations streaming to Zion, bringing wealth and glory.
  • Revelation 21:24–26 – The nations walk by the city’s light, kings bring their glory into it.
Isaiah’s vision of Zion as the global worship centre is picked up by John and expanded.

6. Judgment of the Wicked / Finality of Evil 🔥🐍

  • Isaiah 24–27 (“Isaiah’s Little Apocalypse”) – Earth laid waste, judgment on Leviathan the serpent, songs of deliverance.
  • Isaiah 34:8–10 – Edom’s smoke rises forever, a picture of everlasting judgment.
  • Revelation 14:11; 19:3; 20:10 – Smoke of torment rises forever; the dragon/serpent cast into the lake of fire.

Both employ cosmic-scale judgment and serpentine/dragon imagery for chaos and evil.

7. The Tree Imagery 🌳🍇

  • Isaiah 55:12–13 – Trees clap their hands, thorns replaced by cypress and myrtle.
  • Isaiah 61:3 – God’s people as “oaks of righteousness.”
  • Revelation 22:2 – The tree of life yields fruit for healing the nations.
Tree imagery becomes a symbol of life, righteousness, and restoration.

8. God as King / The Throne Vision 👑🛐

  • Isaiah 6:1–3 – Vision of God on His throne, holy, holy, holy.
  • Isaiah 52:7; 52:10 – God reigns as King, showing His arm to the nations.
  • Revelation 4–5 – Throne vision: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty,” and the Lamb shares the throne.
The continuity of throne imagery underlines divine sovereignty and holiness.

9. Banquet of the End Times 🍷🍞

  • Isaiah 25:6–8 – Feast on Zion, death swallowed up forever, tears wiped away.
  • Revelation 19:6–9; 21:4 – Marriage supper of the Lamb, death destroyed, God wipes every tear.
John’s vision explicitly fulfils Isaiah’s feast with Christ as Bridegroom.

10. Names and Titles of God and Messiah 🕊🦁

  • Isaiah 9:6–7 – Child born, Prince of Peace, everlasting reign.
  • Isaiah 11:1–10Shoot from Jesse, Spirit-filled ruler, peace among nations and creatures.
  • Revelation 5:5; 19:11–16 – Lion of Judah, Root of David, Word of God, King of kings.
John draws on Isaiah’s Messianic titles to identify Jesus as the fulfilment.

Summary:
Revelation is almost a “commentary” on Isaiah’s prophecies, taking Isaiah’s vision of cosmic renewal, judgment, Zion’s glory, and God’s kingship and showing how they are fulfilled in the Lamb. Where Isaiah pointed forward, Revelation unveils the completion in Christ.
